One does not accumulate but eliminate. It is not daily increase but daily decrease. The height of cultivation always runs to simplicity
-Bruce Lee
We often equate working less with being lazy and unproductive, where as we consider working more as more productive. Hmm…I use to think this way, but now I don’t. Several months back I was talking with a friend of mine, questioning him about how he is able to yield such great results by working less than myself and his other peers. His answer was short. I learned to leverage. What…how’s that an answer I thought. It didn’t click until I was on a conference call with a few local business owners and one of the guys on the phone said something that connected the dots.
Speaking on success (in any given area) he said, “what are the 3 key things that you must do daily in order to get you the results you want to get. Figure that out and you’re on your way.” Hmm. In reading the Four Hour Work Week, an absolutely powerful book by author and lifestyle designer Tim Ferriss, I discovered that Tim speaks about a similar principle. Less is more, Tim says. He broke down the concept of stripping away the unnecessary tasks, and focusing on priorities; the high impact activities that yield results. It’s a radical approach but the outcome will turn you into a results generating monster, which is exactly what you want to be, right.
The following excerpt was ripped straight out of the 4 hour work week, and it is worthy of notice.
There are 2 synergistic approaches for increasing productivity that are inversions of each other:
- Limit tasks to the important to shorten work time (80/20 rule)
- Shorten work time to limit tasks to the important (Parkinson’s Law)
The best solution is to use both together: Identify the few critical tasks that contribute most to income and schedule them with very short and clear deadlines.
Note: The key thing is to identify the high impact tasks first and create deadlines for them, for if you don’t, the unimportant tasks will become important. I’ll also explain the 80/20 rule and Parkinson’s Law in a follow up post.
Promise me before you go to bed tonight and every night after this, make it a practice to create a to-do list for the following day. Identify the high impact tasks (no more than 2-3 items) that will contribute most to the desired results, especially in the case of income generation. Do this over and over again until it becomes a habit.
It’s been a great start to 2012, and I know that you have what it takes to be great. I’m not just saying that, I really mean it. I feel that I will do things this year that I never dreamed I’d be doing. Dream big. Dream really big.
I realize that the time for massive action is now, and I’m focused on getting results. Results that will change the rest of my life for ever.
Don’t be fooled
Don’t be fooled into thinking that you have to fill your days busy activities; paper pushing, emailing, meetings, and other activities in order to be most productive. Yes, all these things definitely come into play at some point; but what I’m saying is, don’t fool yourself into thinking that because you are doing these “busy” activities, that you are being most productive and effective.
